Contemporary art in conversation with history: Magtillt Laan Van Thiel

Today’s featured artist is Magtillt Laan Van Thiel. She was born in the Netherlands and grew up in New Orleans. In 1963 she received a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Cresson European traveling scholarship from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The hallmark of van Thiel’s work are here portraits.  She has had many exhibitions and commissions in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Orlando, and Atlanta. She currently resides with her family in Ocean Springs, Mississippi where she paints, teaches, and exhibits in the new realist tradition of oil painting.
