The Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans is seeking two apprentices in art, design or art history. This session will introduce historic mural painting techniques and practice skills related to color mixing, paint application, issues of practical hand design as well as protocol for off site studio maintenance and work documentation.

A vital part of maintaining the deep cultural history of the arts and its continued growth in New Orleans, this position connects past and present while providing valuable work experience. An initiative of the Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans, this apprenticeship allows for on site learning and refines understanding and skills related to historical painting techniques.

The team will include one lead artist responsible for having created the accepted design, one associate artist with relevant documented painting experience, and 2-3 apprentices/interns.

Beethoven built on Mozart, Chopin built on Beethoven, Velasquez built on Caravaggio, Eakins on Velazquez and Louis Prima’s rhythms on Sicilian folk songs. (Auseklis Ozols)

This project is designed to help build the next generation of visual artists through collaboration and interactive on site learning between established professionals and students.

Hours are negotiable and work around your schedule anytime between 9am and 3pm; Monday through Saturday during September/October 2026. Location: New Orleans City Park.
